2021-10-21 Sand Martins at Oedo

A few weeks ago I was checking out a nearby park and found a group of Sand Martins, Riparia riparia 갈색제비, as well as a Red-rumped Swallow. It felt a little late to be seeing them, but there they were flying about over a stream. The best part was getting some half-decent photos of these fast flying swallows using my digiscoping setup.

2021-10-31 Purple Heron

On a clear sunny day moving about the west coast of Jeju, I found a Purple Heron, Ardea purpurea 붉은왜가리, feeding in a coastal wetland. A rather scarce migrant in Korea, this was a Korean first for me. While I have seen them in Borneo before, this was also the first time I managed a good photo of one. No rainy weather so unfortunately can't throw in a Prince reference.

Managed some photos of it feeding.

Waiting to strike!

Nice reddish brown colours.

Stretching its wings, nice chance to see the wing feathers.

Amidst the reeds and brush.

2021-08-13 Chinese Many-toothed Snake

A bit of a memory post here, this rather rare species of snake was seen in Southwest Jeju in August on a cloudy morning. The Chinese Many-toothed Snake, Sibynophis chinensis 비바리뱀,  is found throughout Southeast and East Asia, but Jeju is the only spot where you can find one in Korea. There's also the possibility that the Jeju population may be their own species. This one was a juvenile, rather tiny if you compare it with the screws in the photo. A week before this I saw a larger adult nearby.

2021-10, South Jeju

A morning hike in late October around the south of Jeju led to a surprise encounter with a group of about 10 Black Wood Pigeons. This was my first time encountering them on Jeju. I've heard that they breed on the southern iselets just off of Seogwipo, and can occasionaly be seen in the mountainous forests. Are they on the move, or do they live in these forests?

2021-10-23 and 24 Fall Migration on Heuksan Island

The morning view of Heuksan Island from Jilli.

Interested to see what fall migration was like elsewhere in Korea this season, I took a weekend trip to Heuksan Island, a place well known for its migratory birds and even has its own research station for banding birds.

Olive-backed Pipit Anthus hodgsoni 힝둥새

I arrived on the island Saturday afternoon and went straight for the fields and wetlands by Baenanggimi. Four Rooks were seen near the harbour enroute, as well as White WagtailsGrey Herons, and plenty of gulls within the harbour (a mix of Black-tailedVega, and Mongolian, with likely others). The fields and wetland had plenty of Stejneger’s Stonechats (recently split to Amur Stonechats), and buntings (Pallas’s ReedRustic, and Black-faced). A Northern Goshawk was seen passing over the valley, and a Common Snipe was flushed while walking along some reeds. Up in a reservoir were a large number of Mandarin Ducks, as well as a pair of Little Grebes.

Eastern Buzzard Buteo japonicus 말똥가리

The next day began before dawn, starting with two Common Snipe and a Common Sandpiper along a stream bed. A leisurely stroll along a channel in Jilli found Oriental Reed WarblerBlack-browed Reed WarblerPale Thrush, plenty of Amur StonechatsBlack-faced BuntingsOlive-backed Pipits, and Oriental Turtle Doves. Further in by a reservoir was a juvenile Black-crowed Night Heron and Tristram’s Buntings.

Returning to the wetland in Baenanggimi afterwards, a nice selection of raptors were seen including OspreyWhite-tailed EagleNorthern GoshawksEurasian Sparrowhawk, and three Eastern BuzzardsPallas’s Reed Bunting and Amur Stonechats were the predominate passerines in the area, but White WagtailsOlive-backed PipitsDaurian Redstarts, and one Yellow-browed Warbler were present as well. In another stream and farm area were a couple surprises, a female Chestnut Bunting and Siberian Rubythroat.

Not just the birds, but the insects were appealing as well. Chinese Mantis Tenodera sinensis 왕사마귀
Not quite winter yet, this Korean Skink (Scincella vandenburghi 도마뱀) was prowling about.

The afternoon was spent in the elevated cow fields in Ye-ri, where a large group of pipits were found, roughly equal parts Red-throated and Buff-bellied. A Eurasian Skylark was briefly heard and then seen, as well as Black Kite, and a Large-billed Crowby the harbour.

The ferry trip on the way there and back unfortunately didn’t yield much other than a few Larus spp. gulls. With no outside access and windows caked over with salt from waves, seawatching wasn’t exactly easy. All in all, a pleasant weekend visit to Heuksan Island.
